Career Plan

Personally I had been researching about the scope of what a designer could do not just in terms of a team, but more towards specialists, and heck there are tons of it.

Firstly I was brutally honest to myself where I’m just going to learn every aspects and be decent in all of it, but there are no such thing as being good in everything, I mean there are people that are acing all of these, but I personally do not believe in such person as they will get complicated by themselves and screw up somewhere in the development progress.

So, without dragging any further, I’m going to introduce myself again after being hiatus for quite an amount of time.

I’m Quak Yao Xuan, you can call me Zebuft or Desmond (Preferred).
I have been in e-sports community since the start of DOTA and was competing since then.
Rather than staying stagnant to a game, I jump from games to games and yet I am able to achieve high skill level within every game that I found interest in.

More of my E-sports achievements are as such: 

  • Broadcasting as co-caster for DOTA 2 games at the early stage of the game.
  • Hosted DOTA 2 Competition Online for Malaysian Citizens and for University
  • Placed 2nd Runner up in Malaysia Qualifier for SouthEast Asia Championship for Heroes of the Strom
  • Joined one of the most acknowledged Malaysian E-sports Community – Malaysian Battlefield Team
  • Placed 2nd Runner up in MSI MGA Overwatch Tournament v1 with Main Team as Substitute member
  • Managed Known Overwatch All-Female Team as Team Manager – MBT.Valkyrie

Without any of my E-sports achievements, my experiences are as below:

  • Promoter experiences for 2 years as part timer for selling sportswear and female products
  • Hosted Dinner for between university clubs
  • Seated as President of Manga, Anime and Games in Asia Pacific University
  • Currently Committee of Malaysian Battlefield Team
  • Basic knowledge of programming in terms of C and Html

My skill that I personally could point it out would be as following:

  • Able to communicate ideas and solve problems
  • Able to manage a team of responsible members
  • Able to use Microsoft programs such as Powerpoint, Access, Word, Visio, Excel.
  • Able to speak multiple languages such as Chinese, English, Hokkien, Malay and some Cantonese.
  • Able to learn and adept different strategies in developments

As for interests, I have a few that will be listed down below:

  • Any sort of marketing strategies to invent a new method of marketing in the future
  • New and agile Game development processes
  • Documentaries on selectively topics that are unsolved
  • Interest in listening to horror stories
  • Playing games regardless of it’s genre
  • Watching hot title movies and look into their story buildup processes
  • E-sports managements
  • Enjoying art from Digital Artists

With all these said, I have slightly changed my direction towards what job scope that I was interest in, which is “Game Content Designer” to “Game Mechanics Designer”.
Reason this direction was change is because throughout the course, I found myself immerse into creating mechanics rather than focusing on stuff like narrative.

From my skill sets and interests, I believe I can serve the Game Developing Industries with these following possibilities:

  • Increase work efficiency between departments
    • This is because I understand strongly the importance of a Development Life Cycle within the Game Developing Industries.
    • I am able to communicate and digest inputs faster with my languages being more comfortable for those who are not fluent in English.
  • Have new marketing strategies for game distributions
    • I strongly there are new ways that the game industry are unwilling to try and with enough convincing and researches result, it can be a new outbreak rather than sticking to the classing marketing model.
    • With my strong interest in marketing researches, I can try my best to work things out to market a game in a correct way of doing business.
  • Making sure the quality control and assurance are on point
      • With enough game library and time spent within playing games, I strongly believe that I can bring out the best comment and help the game to improve and improvise game mechanics to enhance the player’s experience without forgetting the vision of the project

     

  • Invent new style of playing a game
    • Since years has past and game development has increased to different platform, I do have a few idea that I would like to propose towards companies that are willing to take a dive towards experimenting it.

These are the points that I could come up with as for what I can foresee myself contribute towards the game industry.

I hope this long post would let everyone to keep up to date on what I have trained myself with and what I am planning for myself to achieve.
