What Games will People Play

When I consider to buy or not to buy a game, a few thing that come in my mind :

  1. Is the story of the game good?
  2. Are the mechanics good?
  3. How much does it cost?

So today, I’m going to be focus more on why do people consider the story before buying a game?
The Premises that I will have for today’s topic are:

  1. Humans will respond and demand interesting stories
  2. Product can be infused with interesting story

Premise 1 – Humans will respond and demand interesting stories

Storytelling is very strong skillset that has been used for several years regardless in any kind of industry ranging from movies to psychological uses. Storytelling enable people to learn so much more stuff like friendship, cooperation, empathy and also equality. So, why do people like stories?

Based on a research made by Paul J.Zak, he discovered that a neurochemical called oxytocin is a key”it’s safe to approach others” signal in the brain, and these “oxytocin” is produced when we are trusted or shown a kindness which motivates cooperation with others. He also mentioned that he found that character-driven stories do consistently cause oxytocin synthesis, in which motivates people to engage in cooperative behaviors.

Onto the business side, advertisement nowadays also prioritize the usage of storytelling skills. Based on Jim & Jennifer Poage from playbook.amanet.org ,these are the reasons why stories have become an essential business tool,

a.PNG

An interview video with Paul Smith (an expert in storytelling) that you can have a look,

Other than just motivating within the organization, companies also uses “Storyline Advertising” to pull in more customers. A great example is something from a Thai Life Insurance video which touches the viewers with a story of an unsung hero.

Storytelling has a few important elements that everyone should know,

1.PNG
This will ensure that a story has a steady structure and also a sequence so that the story that whoever is building is interesting.

Premise 2 – Product can be infused with interesting story

It is familiar to everyone nowadays that games include a lot of storytelling. Storytelling within a game began as early as 1972 when Pong was release, it was a game that is trying to make table tennis digitally. A lot of standard has rose since the day when the first Final Fantasy game was release. People nowadays ask for a lot when it comes to a great game with strong storyline.

Telltale Games

Telltale Games was a very successful studio with the release of “The Wolf Among Us” and “The Walking Dead” series. the company had made millions of dollars.

These 2 popular series has made a huge debut for the company who now mainly focuses on creating storytelling games. This shows that storytelling has a powerful market within the current video game industry.

Here are the records of sales and ratings that they got throughout the years,

God of War Series

Ahhhh, my personal favorite series of all time. God of war has been in the market since the release on PlayStation 2, 2005. God of War then was a single player hack and slash title which was a huge hit on the console sitting at the 11th place and God of War II at 14th place for Highest PS2 Game Sales. They didn’t just stop there, they also developed on different platform such as mobile phones and handheld consoles.

Although the history of God of War are mostly developed on a hack and slash basis game, they took a huge turn at designing the game and made the game into an action adventure game.

“High risk, High rewards”, the studio decided to make the main character to take this path of a family person and not following the old path of destruction for selfishness, the game direction took a 90 degree turn out of the main elements within their game. To me, this shows that most of the fan of their fan base are fans of the story and not the mechanics of the game itself.

Here are the records of sales and ratings that they got throughout the years,

As a conclusion,
People will respond and demand products that contain interesting story

How do people play games?

How do you play games?
From my research, different people prefer different ways of gaming, but today, I’m going to tackle mostly on a single platform, which will be Mobile Gaming.

Premise 1 : People like Free Portable Games
Premise 2 : Competitive Games on Mobile

People like FREE Portable Games

Gaming is all fun but what’s best when you can bring your own games on the road and play whenever you are and wherever you want. WELL, mobile game is definitely you ultimate choice other than owning an expensive portable console which requires you to purchase titles (unless you like an empty shell that does nothing).

People starting to venture into the mobile gaming scene when phones have simple pass time games like Snakes and Tetris. But as time goes on, technology improves and so does standards improved. So people craved for better games and which coloured games are announced for the new coloured phones but by then digital monetization is already happening, best example are games from the company Gameloft. This type of gaming has triumph for 5 years until 2007 Apple.Inc introduced the first iPhone with touch screen functionality worldwide. This made a mark for the history as developers changed their direction from direct premium monetization to Freemium because of the new IOS Store announcement.

As the years pass by and smartphone become more common, popular games start to pop out for smartphone users, great examples are Doodle Jump, Angry birds and Words with friends. The market shifts from actually charging people to enjoy their products to letting them play for free, and by this, the gaming community for the mobile platform had grown significantly.

Based on this chart that I found,
a
Mobile gaming has shown a significant jump ever since 2016.

So, why are people choosing to play on this platform? There are several reason that comes to mind :

  1. Portability
  2. Console quality titles
  3. Cheap and free
  4. Fun

This 4 reasons are the cores of why people play on the mobile phone.

Portability

With only the device small enough to fit one hand, you can bring it everywhere you want and all you need is a pair of hands to play it! You don’t need no mouse and keyboard, it is all in the phone!

Console Quality Titles

Mobile gaming has step up their quality throughout the years and now capable of releasing more heavier graphic titles like Hitman GO and Minecraft available for most of the devices out there! There are also free titles like MapleStory M and PES 2018

Cheap and Free

Games like Temple Run, Angry Birds and Candy Crush Saga are free and you can spend a very minimum amount to get great games like Final Fantasy games, GTA series which are used to be console only titles!

Fun!

Mobile platform has such humongous library that it can cater more players than a PC do from the size that is needed to be download to how easily can the player try games out with the ease of the help of Play Store and IOS Store’s advertising space for them.

With the recent jump in mobile phone specification, players can also broadcast their gameplay worldwide by using their phone making it even more worth for their money rather than choosing to play on PC.

Next,

Competitive Games on Mobile

Competitive gaming or so called E-sports has been a hit since 1997 on the PC platform, it was the core on how gaming is spread towards the word, positively and negatively.

And when the prize pool got bigger, people begin to get more into it. It spread from First Person shooter to Multiplayer Online Battle Arena to Battle Royale.

Esports never stop their growth, which also in contrast means that developers will not stop growing as well. Many fans have been hook to it and finally, it came to the Mobile platform.

With the release of one of the most hot title back then “Turbo Racing League”, mobile esports game got a huge head-start with a bagging 1M prize pool for grabs!

It comes to a point of why people are attracted to this? I would say it’s quite similar to why people choose this platform to game :

  1. It is a counterpart of a PC game
  2. It can be played anywhere
  3. It is free

Counterpart of a PC game

Games that are Competitive on the PC are now on the Mobile platform just with another re-skin and minor redesign of the game. Examples are Arena of Valor and Mobile Legends : Bang Bang. Not just that, even mainstream company have sign deals to port their game to the mobile platform like PUBG and Fortnite.

Can be played anywhere

This is a problem for PC gamers where they can’t simply gather around and play, but with mobile, they can practice whenever and wherever they are.

It is free

Nearly all of the Competitive games that can found in the stores are all Free to Play and only charges for cosmetics or fast progression unlocks.

As a Conclusion, I would say people enjoy playing mobile games because it is very accessible, fun and yet competitive.

How does this affects the business cycle?

Based on what is reported in Newzoo, because the focus shift had gone from PC and console to Mobile, a huge amount of revenue and market to be aimed.

As the platform grows, developers are easily popping out prefer to develop their games on a mobile platform simply because it can reach a worldwide range of people and at the same time getting paid with the way Freemium games are paid nowadays, including download counts, in game content and advertisement.

Investors will also not be interested in spending money on a limited platform when there are a huge reason to choose mobile as a main platform for their advertisements purposes.

Why do people play games?

It has come to a moment where people always ask themselves, why do we play games?
Is it for the sake of fun? Or it is just something that takes us out of this dimension the believe what our world could be in our way.

Today I will be discussing 2 definitive premises,
– People play games to socialize
– People play games to achieve a higher prestige

Firstly,

PEOPLE PLAY GAMES TO SOCIALIZE

Nowadays people have a strong bond with traditional socializing methods such as having a dinner, meeting or event gatherings, but those times are a basic first hand experience of how people interact with each other.

Many industries nowadays have people who play games, Competitive or not, they all play games, and therefore it is a step up on socializing in this current generation.

A few example on how games are bringing people together are games such as

OVERWATCH

Overwatch is a Multiplayer online First Person Shooter game where it requires both skill and most importantly communicating skills from each personal on the team to achieve the best way to win every matches in the game.

This game has been on a very high leaderboard for the pass years and till now, people are still playing and watching it for both Competitive scene of the game and the fun of the game.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT

I will never forget this particular game when it comes to socializing games. World of Warcraft has been a staple for a lot of gamers around the world and you wouldn’t believe me if I would say this game brings a lot of people together.

World of Warcraft (WoW) is the most famous MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that has ever surfaced on earth. Based on Statista, WoW will be expecting to remain at least a number of 5.5M players remain in their subscription for the game until the end of 2018. Many from the game industry found their friends playing WoW for a long time and this games brings their relationship even further.

A best example is this couple from the article where they met each other in this particular game and got together in real life. LINK HERE

BATTLE ROYALE GAMES (PUBG, Fortnite, etc … )

Battle Royale Games are the current hype for 2018, tons and tons of mobile user are up for PUBG Mobile (Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile) and this impacted the China Communities 10 times more than any other countries. With the initial success of the game on the PC, PUBG mobile has a larger fan base and even competition up to 600k USD for grabs. People in China even have cases where they hunt down cheaters in their local cybercafe .

Even the branching company “Tencent” has release a firm to fight against Cheaters arresting not less than 120 people has been caught. LINK HERE

With all of these games being in the market to be grabbed, people formed multiple communities around it such as gaming groups, modding groups and so on. Even companies (especially game related companies) requires people to have experience in particular games as a requirement.

Games connect people unbelievably closer than a lot of social interaction, it might be a starter for a lot of people just because they played with each other within a match.

Secondly,

People play games to achieve a higher prestige

Many people like me, likes playing games but that is not only the fun part, we love dominating the game more than any other things, and this is where Esports started.

Esports Officially started with a BANGING 10k participant to join a Space Invader Competition. This has marked a significant start for something fresh and when travelling was not a convenient thing back then.

You can read more about the history of Esports here.

Esports grew significantly at the start of 2011 when Dota 2 had their first Ofiicial tournament called “The International”, it was the first ever game that had over 1 MILLION dollars for grabs and this shocked every industry.

Esports by then never stop growing, competition grew larger and larger attracting to millions of people joining this Competitive Gaming Industry.

If you have read my Career Plan and my Intro, you should know I myself have a lot of involvement within this industry as well. Personally as an aspiring business interpreter, I have to acknowledge the impact of Esports towards the marketing industries.

Here’s an article to read up based on the how much people in the industry think of marketing impact by the Esport industry. LINK HERE LINK 2

As a Conclusion, People play games not to only have fun but to reach a higher level and get close to each other in the simplest form of having fun.

So, how does this impacts the Business Cycle?

People in the Esport Industry plays games that are mostly online, so I will be mentioning the trends of the current generation :

  • Battle Royale games
  • MOBA
  • FPS

These few game genres are huge and brings impact towards the game industry. It is still true that Single Player games are still successful and healthy to build but lets be honest here, we all know that a multiplayer game has a very vast reach potential and could also potentially give a lot of income towards future projects.

There are 2 common traits that falls under the line of current hype games:

  • They let players to connect with each other
  • They let players to have slight difference in each games that they play

Based on this article, there are 6 elements that makes a good multiplayer game

  • Emphasis on Teamwork
  • Different Modes
  • Easy to learn, Fun to Master
  • Progression System with Unlockables
  • Downloadable Content (DLC)
  • Offline Options

With these elements, I could not think of a better example than Monster Hunter : World (MHW). This game have achieve most of the elements above and still bringing in contents continuously after their release. Although there are only a small competitive scene that approaches MHW such as speedruns and time breaker, I personally would consider this game to be one of the best games out there for everyone. The games have a few features that are worth the be mentioned such as :

  • Easy to learn weapons and monster patterns
  • Interesting Storyline and in game culture
  • offline capability
  • Mod friendly (as for now, since Capcom has yet to release any news regarding this)
  • Solo and Multiplayer Difficulty adjustment

What can I contribute to the Game Development in my future

I have experience dealing with sponsorship and marketing agents in my experience with a competitive team involvement as a player and manager, so I am confident that coming up with new marketing strategies that helps to promote and sell games more efficient is what I am capable of doing especially when it comes to a multiplayer game. This requires my skill of able to grab the core pointers of the game and spread it towards the community.

Other than that I am also capable of designing levels with tools like Stencyl or Minecraft. I have yet to be good in Unity but I am able to understand the basics of the codes. Mockups of game level design are also one of the things I could do and had been a practice since my study of Game Genre Studies 2 semester back.

These are the current skills that I had practiced and I hope to learn even more towards development tools in the future.

That’s all I have for now and I hope you tune in to the next post, PEACE!

Platformer : Summary of the Weeks

As the title says, I’m going to sum up all my progress within the weeks that I had spent making this game. This game was very interesting and fun to make. Most importantly, the play-testers had a heck of a time enjoying the game not just in playing but also observing it!

1st week – I had plan and propose the game idea with a mock-up on how the game is going to be like as well as the objective of developing this game.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

2nd week – I had shown a mock up of my game and bring out the idea of the game in terms of the looks for the player, enemies, traps and goal pole that I plan to include within the game itself.

asdasdad.png

3rd week – I shown the tilesets, “Brick” block, sound assets (with the planning of edit for the background music) and a background for the game itself. I also add in a small mock-up to show the development progress.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

4th week – This week I show the background for the 2nd level, the “Main Menu” & “Credits” screen and also the edited version of the background music.
I also added in a short gameplay of the game played by myself within the post itself.

Update on Little Boy : Unexpected Adventure

So coming to this week I was pretty busy for another project and assignments for the university, but I still manage to pull of some parts of the game that I want developing this game with full interest!

First of all, I have done the background for a NEW LEVEL (which I will show later).

asdasdad.png

In the previous post I showed a list of background that I will consider to include it within my game an this one definitely fits in my opinion. The reason I choose this backdrop with a orangery color matching to the backdrop is because of time travelling, at the first level, the player are travelling in the morning which he just started to venture in to the dangerous forest. This signifies that the level aesthetics are not just a background that means nothing but also the time that the he has been out and the nature of the forest.

The crowding of the forest are also not just an aesthetics as well, within my my own explanation, this would signify how deep into the forest that this kid has been into his own adventure and have yet to give up.

Next would be the Menu and credits screen

asdasdad

Main Menu

asdasdad

Credits

These are small edits and composition I made from the backdrop of Super Mario World and simple Text edits with the usage of “Judera Ring & Italic” font that I got from here. Feel free to venture more interesting text that can be found here!

Another update is for my background music update, since the game is going to take some time to finish, so I have slightly edited the music that I found and shown within the last post and here is how it sound.

I personally feel like the music itself is catchy and I don’t want to ruin it, so instead of having most of the part edit (first time doing this by the way), I hike the pitch up for one part of the music and tune up the bass and the other part of the music.
Reason that I made this decision is to annoy the player further not just in the difficulty of the game but also the surrounding that they are being thrown into.

I have made research on a few thing that I will list it down:

  1. Memes
  2. Psychological Article
  3. Players who rages in games within Youtube videos.

MEMES (You are warned to lower down your volume in order to save you eardrums)

This was a fast one, some memes like this one

This meme has a high pitch and for people who are using their computers and especially for those who are wearing headset when they are using their computer. Another great example would be this

This has a HIGH pitch that a lot of people couldn’t handle and in the original, it signifies as an attack that would kill the opponent like shown below.

Psychological Articles

I have read a few from Business Insider, Quora Forum and Psychological Today.

Business Insider had the best answer in my opinion to provide the best explanation to you guys.

Automaticity: Activate the senses.

“We pay attention subconsciously and automatically to certain sights, sounds, and colors and other sensory stimuli based on the contrast they have with their surroundings and the associations we have with them,” Parr says.

so from using high pitches like how the article explained different colors give different meanings ( you can click this link to know more on colors on a psychological aspect here ) will give a hard time to let the player to be focusing on the game itself, in which will also achieve my personal design intention for the game.

Youtube Videos

I been through a lot of videos that was like rage compilation and also some gameplay of them and how does the rage build within the player and I found the Youtuber “PewDiePie” and “Markiplier” most interesting and easy to understand.

They repeat their progress on how the game simply trolled them and remember it. Next time they will find another way around to progress to the end of the level, which is the frustrating part.

There are a lot of it so I will only post one of it here

To sum it up, I will show you some progress of me finishing my own game which you can download it here. There are some bugs within the build, so feel free to drop down a comment and I will try to fix it!
Note : I have not implemented the background music within this game and the updated credits screen.

Thanks for reading and I will see you again, in the next post 🙂

Update on Assets (Tileset, Sound and Background)

Within the last post I showed you the enemies, main character and obstacles within the game but there are missing parts which will be the background and the tilesets.

So I will present to you the tilesets that I will be using this time around would also be from Super Mario World.

Tileset

tiles-ground.png

This would basically be included in all of my different levels that I will be building in the future and the current level.

Bricks

bricks.png

Bricks are basically a block that can be only destroyed by the player. Punches might be weak but headbutts from a kid by my own experience, hits 10 times more harder than their punches.

Sound Assets

Other than tilesets, there are a few sound assets that I found and will be using for the game. I’ve went through a more on the background music such as different games which includes Mario SNES series, Sonic 1,2 and 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ( The one on NES) and Double Dragon. I personally felt that Sonic 1 is the most suitable one as there is pitches and also casual feel at the same time.

1st Asset

Every single time the player dies, this will be playing.

2nd Asset

There will a sound to bring out how it feels when breaking a brick, the first sound impact was the breaking of a brick with the correlation of a brick being impacted towards your head.

3rd Asset

This the background music for the game itself, I will personally extend it longer or find it online again for an extended version of this. Reason that I wish to insert this to my game would be the tune of the music, I personally find it very distracting compared to the ones that were provided from the Mario Series itself, the pitches and the swings of the 8 bit music slays the attention of the player which also fits my design intention.

Background

Every game has their own unique background to bring out how one character travels through different time and space and location. An example would be like Mass Effect Series, Mass Effect 2.

When Sheperd is travelling to an Alien Island to recruit a member and execute a mission, the game provides what is it to be like within the level.

asdasdasdasdasd.jpg

Trees, small rock mountains and some tents to show that there are living things within the area. This is enough to let the player to immerse into the feeling of being within an island.

backgrounds-2.png

As for the background, at first I thought that I was going to use Stencyl color adjustment but you know what, that looks very boring, so, I’m going to take the outline of how Super Mario World have and include it in so that it will look more fabulous~ I will still invest more time to find more assets to put into the background of the screen, but for now, I think these are sufficient.

As how the game currently looks like, I will show you here

asdasdad.png

I’ve done more background programming to make sure everything works rather than focusing on the media part of the game.

I hope this is enough to suffice you guys this time, if there are any inquires or more stuff that you wish to know that I have not mentioned here, please drop a comment and I will try my best to reply you ASAP.

THANKS !!

Enemies and Art assets for Little Boy : Unexpected adventures

Last week I showed you the small scheme of the assets, ideal level creation and also some of the assets that I would be using for the game. For this iteration, I would like to show you more on what is being brought out from my research based on assets that will guide people to have a fix mindset.

What Do I Mean by ” Assets that will GUIDE people to have a fix mindset” ?

Example, MARIO series.

asdasdad

The first ever Super Mario stands out as a very successful game by Nintendo up until now and it is still a glory example for game developers to study. This “Mario” character has been existing since 1985 Sep 13 when the game was release on NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) platform and until today, we can see countless sequels of Mario in different scenarios, but, there is a thing that always stays inside a mind of a Mario player is the level concepts and controls, they are simple, understandable and logical.

Which means, platforms will be walk-able,  enemies will be will established and obstacles will always be very visible. All of the players who plays the Mario series will understand this point very well. And by this understanding, I will be using most of my art assets from the game Super Mario World.

The Main Character

The Main Character

asdasdad

Yes, thats’s small Mario before he has eaten the MYSTICAL MUSHROOM.

The sprites are easily obtained by going to this website

http://www.mariouniverse.com/sprites/snes/smw

As for what I’m going to use for my game, I will list it down properly here.

mario looking rightmario looking left ( Idle looking left and right )

mario looking leftmario walking left 1mario looking rightmario walking right 1 ( Walking )

mario jumping rightmario jumping left ( Jumping )

mario duck rightmario duck left ( Ducking )

mario die 1mario die 2 ( Death )

These are the main character assets that I will need as for the current progression of my game. I hope that I will include more as there is a huge ton of sprites there that looks interesting and yet functional.

The Enemies

There are a few enemies in my mind that I decided to include and there are a few that are left unconfirmed as I am worried that I will not have sufficient time to include them into my game.

1st Enemy

asdasdad

This would be the basic enemy, like how it functioned within the Super Mario World, Player will only need to stomp on them to kill it.

2nd Enemy

asdasdad

Like how I showed it within my proposal post, this would be the enemy that will be dropping down spikes(will be shown later)  and also a misguiding mushroom that will turn the player into a SUPER BIG SIZE, which will make everything the player touch to be destroy and it also means that the player will fall to his death.

3rd Enemy

asdasdad.png

This is a wizard enemy, like how the old school witches and magicians or even priests, they dress in some sort of magical hat and shoots out mystical stuff to hurt or to heal people, but in this case, it will kill the player.

Last Enemy

asdasdad

This would be the last enemy that I have in mind for now. This enemy will have 2 forms, one on the ground ( the turtle without the wings ) and another flying one ( the turtle with the wings ). After the player stomp this enemy, it will turn into a shell that can be pushed by the player to clear simple obstacles.

The Obstacles

Obstacles are subject to change from time to time as I most likely would add more in the future

1st Obstacle

spikes

Spikes, every developer likes that, simple and yet understandable trap.

2nd Obstacle

fire1_ 01fire1_ 02fire1_ 03fire1_ 04fire1_ 05fire1_ 06fire1_ 07fire1_ 08fire1_ 09fire1_ 10fire1_ 11fire1_ 12fire1_ 13

Fire, there would be unexpected fire within the forest which is called forest fire, so, why not include it in 🙂

3rd Obstacle

asdasdad

Seen in Super Mario World and it would be very useful within my game as this will make the difficulty go up to another level for the player as they are required to player the game with full focus, some distraction will make them suffer a tiny bit more 🙂

4th Obstacle

asdasdad.png

I don’t think I recall this as an enemy, but within my game it will be come an obstacles, the texture of this being looks like a rock, and a little boy can’t destroy a rock. It makes sense? He doesn’t have enough strength.

Last Obstacle

asdasdad

A falling block that will go back to the place where it is from. Seems fun, seems fair seems very evil.

CheckPoint

asdasdad

This will be the checkpoint art asset that I will be using.

Goal Pole

SMASSMBFlagpoleSprite.png
